Search Engine Optimization Tips (SEO)
Introduction
Search Engine Optimization is the process of making your webpages searchable by the various Search Engines. Your website may look pleasing to the eye, but that doesnt mean it will score terribly well with the Search Engines. There are a number of mistakes that web designers and new webmaster make when putting websites together. The starting point in Search Engine Optimization is really when you are first designing your website. It is generally best practice to put your website together from the point of view of the Search Engines, and of internet users, who are in the main searching for quality original content. Therefore my best advice is to research the kind of keywords and keyword phrases that people are generally typing in, when saearching for content similar to that available on your website, and then make sure you have lots of pages which specifically target these different keyword phrases
How Search Engines Work
Search Engines work by using an automatic process of "spidering" the websites that are in their database. In this automatic process, there are certain things that the Search Engines are looking for when deciding what any particular webpage is about, what sort of ranking it should be given and how it should be indexed. Key among these things are:
- Header Tags e.g. H1, H2, which should be placed at the top of your webpage, and at the head of your paragraphs
- Meta Tags, which are special tags, placed before the start of your main body tag
- Title Tag, which is a special tag, which is placed within the Head tag of your webpage, and which places important text within the blue pencil strip, right t the top of the browser window
- The content of the page that is related to the particular keyword or keyword phrase you are targeting. Original fresh content will always be ranked higher than old "archived" content
- Links, especially inbound one-way links found on other websites
Getting Your Website listed
In order to get your website listed in the Search Engines, it is best to start by manually submitting your website to Google, Yahoo and MSN. Once you website is in these Search Engines, many other Search Engines and Directories, will pick up links to your website. Its also a good idea to try and make sure that you develop as many links to your website as possible. The best links are one-way links. These can be bought, but you can also establish such links by writing articles for the Article Directories, and contributing to Forums. In each case you are allowed to place a "sig file" or author bio, which will contain a live clickable link to your website. Once the Search Engines start picking up all sorts of links to your website, on other sites, then your websites will give you a better ranking. However this process can take a significant amount of time
Improving Your Website Ranking
Where your website appears in the lis of sites returned when people perform a search on the Search Engines, depends on many factors, but the main two factors are:
- Original Unique Keyword Based Content - this means you have lots of new articles and webpages, which are relevant to the keywords that people are searching for
- Quality One-Way Inbound Links - particularly from other sites, which are currently listed higher in the search results
Automatic And/Or Bulk Submission Services
There are a number of website services which will submit your website to thousands of Seaerchg Engines and directories in one go for a low monthly or one-off charge. This kind of service can be a useful addition to normal manual submission, because it will mean a link to your website will appear on potentially thousands of websites. An example of this kind of bulk submission service can be found at www.ebiz4every1.com
